The project MariEMS (Maritime Energy Management Training Strategic Partnership) closing conference took place in Bahcesehir University, Istanbul on 22 March 2018. The attendees were distinguished maritime professionals from the region including BAU’s academic staff and students.

After the welcome speech of Dr. Basak Akdemir of Bahcesehir University, Prof. Reza Ziarati of C4FF made the keynote presentation titled “Efficient Ship”. The Chief Executive Director of EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency) Mr. Markku Mylly was invited as a speaker, and the title of his speech was “Energy Efficiency and Sustainability of Shipping – EMSA Support”. The President of Turkish Maritime Education Foundation Dr. Sualp Urkmez was another renowned speaker and his presentation was "TUDEV transformation into Piri Reis University – Role of EU projects". The presentations were followed by Captain Zakirul Bhuiyan of Southampton Solent University who highlighted the key achievements and final outcomes at the end of 30 months long project to the audience. This EU project is expected to help to reduce the energy usage on-board ships, thereby reducing emissions and pollution. The project is also helping IMO and the EU in achieving their stated emission targets through better training for the management of energy on board vessels.

MariEMS partners have held several presentations to date and intend to participate in the EU Maritime Day and the IMO Congress in the near future. The final conference and partner meeting is scheduled in Istanbul on 22-23 March 2018.

The fifth MariEMS partner meeting took place on 14-15th September 2017 in Barcelona, Spain. A paper has also been prepared for presentation at IAMU 2017, 11-13 October 2017, to disseminate the results of the project to that date. MariFuture has been notified that its paper has been accepted for presentation and publication by IAMU.

MariEMS held a presentation during the Maritime exhibition at Rauma Maritime Campus on 4th May 2017. The event on being put on Facebook; Shipping companies like Finnlines, OSM, Langh ship etc., as well as Port of Rauma and other ports are expected to participate. Professor German De Malo is holding the first MariEMS course this month in Barcelona. The outcome of the course will be reported in the August News.

The partners of the MariEMS (Maritime Energy Management Training Strategic Partnership) project met in Slovenia in February (8-12th) to monitor progress to date and discuss how to continue the project with a view to make sure the proposal as proposed is implemented successfully and on time.

The fourth multiplier event of project MariEMS (Maritime Energy Management Training Strategic Partnership) was held at Faculty of Nautical Studies, University Polytechnic Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain on 15 September 2017 during the MariEMS partners’ meeting. The event was titled: ‘Round Table: Maritime Energy Efficiency’. Southampton Solent University’s Senior Lecturer Zakirul Bhuiyan (lead investigator) and Prof. Reza Ziarati from C4FF presented the project to the audience. The attendees were distinguished maritime professionals from the region and included: Harbour master from port of Barcelona, General Manager of renowned technology company Invertone, Director of environment from the port of Barcelona and Director of European School of Short Sea Shipping.


April 2017 News

The MariEMS UK Multiplier event was held at Warwick University on 29 March during an IMarEST programme. Attendees were mainly marine engineers, along with some attendees who were experts from other maritime and technological fields. The event brought together Marine Engineer Professionals from across the regions in order to gather feedback and industry responses to the newly developed MariEMS Energy Manager Job Specifications and Training Programme.

The MariEMS (Maritime Energy Management Training Strategic Partnership) second partners meeting took place on the 21st and 22nd April 2016 at the Southampton Solent University (SSU) Conference Centre in Southampton. The project was promoted during the European Maritime Day (EMD) events. The following photographs show Professor Ziarati and the President of EMSA together with representatives of Turku City as well as some discussion panels and meetings during the EMD in Turku, Finland.
